German polls: right-wing populist AfD takes SPD for the first time

The German right-wing populist party AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) overtook the SPD on federal level for the first time in a poll in Germany. In the latest INSA survey for boulevard leaf Bild, the Social Democrats have lost another 1.5% after the chaos of the past weeks and now stand at 15.5 percent. The AfD has risen one percent and stands at 16 percent for the SPD.

The Christian Democrats of Union (CDU / CSU) make up two percent and are now 32 percent more than twice as strong as the SPD. The liberal FDP gets 9 percent (-1.5), Linke still 11 percent (-0.5), and the Grünen remain unchanged at 13 percent. With this, according to the polls, a large coalition would no longer be possible.

AfD group chairman Alice Weidel reacts euphorically. "We are the People's Party", she wrote on Twitter. "We are the second strongest party in Germany." The party speaks of a historic day. Party chairman Jörg Meuthen wrote on his Facebook page that at least according to this poll Union and SPD were removed by a majority of 47.5% from a majority. Whoever spends billions on refugees instead of their own people, "should not be surprised by such figures".

Downfall of SPD
This is another blow for the SPD. Despite the resignation of Martin Schulz and the new start with Andrea Nahles, the decline of the party continues unabated. The SPD is currently voting on the initially undesirable participation in the big coalition. Around 463,000 members have been asked to return their ballot papers by 2 March. Many members warn about bad polls for new elections, so the fear of a larger AfD can still influence the mood to go into a big coalition.
